Headline: Holland Fen and Invaders dominate top bowls league

As Holland Fen and Invaders continue to dominate the top of the Orchard Health Group First Division of the Evening League at Boston Indoor Bowls Club, the teams below them are left to fight for the minor places, with those in third and fourth only two points apart and six more not far behind them.

Holland Fen took all six points from their game against IBC, who are seventh, with Martin Tomlin’s rink, with Keith Tointon and Chris Gill, winning well 27-9 and Les Feary’s rink winning 22-12.

Invaders won 6-0 against Strollers, who slipped one place to fourth as a result, in two closely-fought, competitive games, the final scores being 21-18 on Scott Whyers’ rink and 18-14 on Nathan Dunnington’s.

A40 are the new team in third after another good result this week, beating Breakaways 4-2.  Andy Scotney’s rink, playing with Lewis Skinner and Petra Woods, established a 17-1 lead before winning 25-9.  Nick Whitmore skipped his Breakaways rink to a solid 16-9 win, controlling the game from the start.

Optimists had their best result since mid-September in beating Dynamics, sixth, on both rinks.  The score on Andy Reeson’s rink was tight at 13-12 after thirteen ends, then they dominated the final ends to run out 28-12 winners.  Aidan Brickles’ rink was 12-9 up before finishing 22-12 with a good finish.

Golfers, eighth, met bottom team, Nomads, taking four points after winning Graham Scarboro’s rink 22-11 and claiming the extras for shot aggregate.  Rita Epton took the second rink 19-14 for Nomads

Parthians in tenth beat Royal Mail, one place below them, 6-0.  Keith Nix’s rink was in total control for seven ends as they built a 12-0 lead before Royal Mail found their form, reducing the Parthians’ lead to just four shots at the end, leaving the score 20-16.  Richard Keeling’s rink was close at 8-9 after ten ends, then they pulled away to win 20-11.

Both top teams in Cammacks Second Division had 6-0 wins to maintain their one-two positions in the table.  Desperados met Amateurs, winning 23-11 and 16-13 for Dean Harris and Dave Allen.  Mike Long’s rink built a 16-1 advantage against Kingfishers before running out 26-11 winners.  The other rink was tied at 8-8 after eleven ends, then Ken Burr pulled away to win 19-11.

Vectors met Phantoms and registered their third 6-0 win of the season to consolidate their third place in the division.  Kevin Rockall, supported by Chris Parker and John Mitchell, started well and dominated the game to win 24-10.  The score on the other rink was tight throughout, ending 15-13 for Colin Heppenstall after winning the last two ends.

Burtons moved up two places into fourth after beating Shipmates 5-1.  Trevor Dunnington’s rink had the lead from early-on and won 18-14.  The other rink ended in a 15-15 draw for Chris Hill and Jeff Ginsburgh.

Vikings beat Central 4-2, John Stray’s rink winning 18-13, enough to ensure the extras for shot aggregate.  David Boyne’s Central won the other rink 13-10.

Evening League Report                                           Week 10: 10 and 11 November 2025

Headline: Top teams have clear lead in both Night League divisions at bowls club

Week Ten of the Evening League at Boston Indoor Bowls Club saw the end of the first round of games, with the top two teams in each division having a significant lead over the rest.

Holland Fen head the Orchard Health Group First Division by seven points over Invaders with third-placed Strollers another 18 points behind.  In Cammacks Second Division, Desperados and Hotspurs are separated by five points at the top, with Vectors 14 points away in third.

Dynamics started the week in third place in Division One but lost on both rinks against a strong Holland Fen, slipping to fifth as a result.  Alex Tomlin’s rink established their authority early on in their game and ran out 29-10 winners.  Les Feary’s rink won 21-9.

Invaders were too good for Parthians on the night, winning 25-8 and 24-7, to stay within touching distance of the leaders.  Strollers are now third after outplaying Royal Mail on both rinks with scores of 24-14 for Mick Hippisley and 20-12 for Paul Flatters.

A40’s recent good form continued with a 4-2 win over Golfers, moving them up to fourth spot.  Sue Hoyles’ rink won 19-9, having started the game strongly by establishing an early 11-0 lead.  Golfers had control of the other rink from the start, running out 18-12 winners for skip David Marshall, playing with Christine Wilson and Heather Scarboro.

Breakaways swapped places with IBC to move into sixth after beating Nomads on both rinks, Mark Brown’s rink winning 18-9 and Mike Rymer’s 16-9, controlling their games throughout.

IBC faced Optimists, getting four points for winning Ian Smith’s rink 26-17 and for ensuring they took the extras for the shot aggregate by just one shot.  Andy Reeson won the other rink 23-15 for two points for Optimists.

Desperados and Hotspurs in Cammacks Second Division both had good 6-0 wins to keep their lead at the top of the table.  Desperados faced Phantoms, with Phantoms slipping one place to fifth as a result.  Dave Allen’s rink bowled impressively throughout to win 23-8, while the game was much closer on Dean Harris’s rink, which they eventually won 20-14.

Mike Long’s Hotspurs rink started well to lead 13-0 and continued to dominate the game to win 29-6.  Ken Burr also started well to be 10-1 ahead, controlling the game through to its conclusion, winning 23-11.

Vectors remain in third place, despite their first poor result for a month, after being beaten 6-0 by Amateurs, who themselves produced their best performance in the league since early October.  Trevor Coulson was 9-11 down after ten ends, then dominated the second half of the game to win 28-13.  Mick Williamson bowled well on the second rink to win 20-7.

Woodpeckers moved up two places to fourth after taking all six points from their game against Shipmates, Bob Thompson dominating to win 26-5 and Richard Cullen holding on to win 17-15.

Kingfishers beat Vikings 4-2, Brian Hardy’s rink controlling their game to win 27-8.  John Millership’s Vikings rink won 23-14.

Headline: Yetton and Egham squads through to next round at bowls club

The first-round proper of this year’s national competitions involving Boston Indoor Bowls Club took place recently with the ladies Yetton team and the mixed Egham team both winning to reach the next round, and the men’s Denny team only just falling short.

Against Sleaford, the Yetton team had an overall shot aggregate of 93-56, the games at Boston ending 23-17 and 14-14 for Jean Cammack and Sue Simpson-Shaw, while the away rinks ended 27-10 for Helen Butler and 29-15 for Sue Hoyles.  They now play Lincoln, home and away, on 15 November.

The mixed Egham team were triumphant, also against Sleaford, by 90 shots to 65, with Jonathan West winning 28-11 and Martin Tomlin, 26-19, at home, and Alex Tomlin winning 20-16 at Sleaford.  The fourth rink was lost, but only just, 16-19.  The next round will be against Spalding Lightning.

The Denny squad played Spalding Lightning and came very close to grabbing victory, the final score being 75-79, with wins for Alex Tomlin 20-12 and Andy Reeson 17-15.  A special mention for the comeback on Martin Tomlin’s rink as they fell 5-23 behind to Dominic McVittie, but stormed back to end 21-24, and might have won with another couple of ends.

In the Orchard Health Group First Division of the Evening League, the clash of the week featured Dynamics, third in the table, and A40, fresh from two 6-0 wins, who are in fifth.  Tight games on both rinks saw A40 take another six points, leaving them level on points with fourth-placed Strollers and one behind Dynamics.

Jean Cammack was trailing 13-19, but eight shots scored over the last two ends saw them victorious by 21-19.  Likewise, Sue Hoyles was 17-18 down and won 19-18.

Strollers met Holland Fen and were beaten 6-0, with rink scores of 26-13 and 19-10.  Invaders also took six points in beating IBC, 26-9 and 23-15.  Seven points separate leaders Holland Fen and Invaders, while the gap below them to third has opened up to 17 points.

Breakaways beat Optimists 4-2, winning Nick Whitmore’s rink 20-15 and losing 19-23 to Aidan Brickles.  In taking all the points against Royal Mail with 27-13 and 18-13 wins, Golfers moved up one place to eighth.  Parthians met Nomads, beating them 4-2, with Keith Nix’s rink winning well 21-10.  A close game on the other rink went to Clive Newell’s Nomads 16-15.

Desperados now lead Cammacks Division Two by five points from Hotspurs, who didn’t have a match, after beating Vikings 6-0, with 20-14 and 19-14 wins.

Tied on points as they started their game, Vectors beat Burtons 5-1 to move clear into third place.  Chris Parker’s rink won 19-11 while Kevin Rockall’s finished well to draw 14-14 after being 7-14 down.

Phantoms moved above Burtons into fourth after beating Shipmates 6-0, with 24-11 and 20-12 wins.

Woodpeckers beat Kingfishers 4-2, leaving them in sixth and seventh, winning 27-9 on one rink and losing 10-17 on the other.

Headline: Desperados win top of the table clash at bowls club

The stand-out match last week in Boston Indoor Bowls Club’s Evening League was the top of the table clash between the pace setters in Cammacks Division Two, Hotspurs and Desperados.

The match was closely contested on both rinks, finally ending 4-2 to Desperados, moving them up to within one point of leaders Hotspurs.  Rob Druce fell 11-15 behind but finished strongly to win one rink 18-15 for Hotspurs after scoring seven shots in the last three ends.  Hotspurs steadily created a 12-7 advantage on the other rink, but Colin Louth for Desperados took the next eight ends to claim the game 17-12, ensuring the shot aggregate for two extra points.

In the Orchard Health Group First Division, Holland Fen and Invaders both had 6-0 wins to move them further ahead at the top of the table.  Holland Fen beat Parthians 22-16 for Chris Gill and 18-15 for Martin Tomlin.  Invaders faced Breakaways, Scott Whyers dominating his game to win 20-8, while Rod West had to recover from 5-11 and 9-14 down to win 16-14 with a strong finish.

Dynamics moved into third after beating Nomads 4-2, albeit getting the extras for shot aggregate by just one shot.  Once again, Graham Wilkinson’s rink won convincingly, by 23-13 this week, having started the game well to be 14-0 up.  The other rink was close until Mel Maddison ensured a good finish to win 17-8 for Nomads.

A40 took all the points off Strollers, moving them up to fifth, with Strollers slipping to fourth.  Jean Cammack’s rink was in total control to lead 17-0, eventually winning 25-8.  The other rink was close at 12-12 before Sue Hoyles ensured the win 17-13.

Royal Mail beat IBC 6-0, their best result of the season.  Keith Sharp’s rink came back from 8-13 to take the last five ends to win 18-13.  Carly Morris trailed 1-9, but then dominated the game to win 19-15.

Andy Reeson skipped his Optimists’ rink to win 20-8 against Golfers, the other rink going to Graham Scarboro for Golfers, 19-12, for 2 points.  Optimists are now eighth in the table, with Golfers ninth and just one point between them and Royal Mail in eleventh.

Back to Cammacks Division Two, a new team is now third after Vectors had a good 5-1 win over Woodpeckers.  Kevin Rockall’s rink led throughout to win 17-11.  Colin Heppenstall’s rink had the edge over Woodpeckers, leading 12-8, but Richard Cullen ensured the rink was tied at 12-12 giving Woodpeckers one point.

Burtons are equal on points with Vectors but with a poorer shot aggregate after beating Central 4-2.  Chris Hill’s rink had a comprehensive victory 34-5.  David Boyne claimed 2 points for Central with a 19-15 win.

Vikings found some form to take 6 points off Shipmates and go into sixth place, with Clare Britchford’s rink winning 24-11 and John Stray’s holding on to win 15-14.

Kingfishers beat Amateurs 6-0 to move up four places to seventh, with Ian Pryke’s rink winning 26-5 and Brian Hardy’s 15-14.

A40 beat Parthians on both rinks for six points, moving up three places in the table to seventh.  Sue Hoyles controlled the game on her rink to win 18-7.  Jean Cammack took an early 13-0 lead on hers before Richard Keeling for Parthians worked their way back into the game to tie the score at 15-15 with two ends to go.  Parthians then scored five to make it 15-20, before A40 scored a hotshot of six to win 21-20.

Evening League Report                                               Week 6: 13 and 14 October 2025

Headline: Successful Triples Tournament at the Indoor Bowls Club

Action at Boston Indoor Bowls Club last week saw the first open drawn 3-wood triples tournament of the new season, sponsored by Boston Blinds and the club’s Bonus Ball.  Attracting sixty bowlers, including several new members and some new to bowling, they were split into twenty teams of three.  Each team played three games, scoring points in each for the number of ends won and for winning the game.

Coming out on top, and the only team with three wins during the day, was the trio of Ken Bainbridge, Kelvin Hallam and Ian Smith.  Starting slowly, they won their first game 9-6, then powered on impressively in their next two games, winning 17-2 and 11-3.

Two wins and a draw secured second and third places, second for Malc Hilton, Matt Wilkinson and Ken Burr, with Margaret Wilkinson, Trish Dunn and Alan Everitt just behind them in third.

Back to the Night League and the most recent games in Orchard Health Group First Division, the top two teams both took maximum points but were made to work hard for them.  Holland Fen met Breakaways, winning one rink 21-15, and taking the other 18-16, but only after trailing 11-14 with seven ends to go.

Nathan Dunnington skipped Invaders to beat Golfers 20-8 on one rink, but the second was closely fought throughout and only won with the final score of the game to go 17-16.

Dynamics are the new team in third place after beating Royal Mail 6-0 in two competitive games.  Graham Wilkinson went 16-7 ahead, then held on as Royal Mail mounted a come-back, eventually winning 19-14.  Royal Mail held a 13-10 lead on the other rink, but Dynamics finished well to win the game 18-14.

Strollers, now fourth, beat Nomads 4-2 in a close contest.  As the last end on both rinks started, Nomads were in the frame to take all six points, but Strollers scored four shots on each rink to win Andy Warne’s 22-19 and to just lose Paul Flatters’ rink 15-16.

IBC beat A40 4-2 in another close match, and only took the net shot aggregate by one.  The scores were close on both rinks for 12 ends, then IBC pulled away on Ian Smith’s rink to win 25-13, while A40’s Jean Cammack finished strongly to win 24-13 on the other.

Parthians took four points off Optimists, with Keith Nix’s rink controlling the game to win 27-13, while Optimists’ skip John Melless was always ahead on the other to win 26-18.

In Cammacks Division Two, the top two teams both won 4-2 to maintain the three point gap between them.  In two close games against Vectors, Hotspurs won one rink 15-12, losing the other 14-15 on the last end.  Desperados faced Burtons, winning one rink 20-11, Burtons taking the other 19-14.

Phantoms are third after beating Kingfishers on both rinks for all six points, while the four points taken by Woodpeckers against Central moved them into fourth.  Shipmates beat Amateurs 4.2 to leave them in seventh.

Headline: Hotspurs and Desperados lead the charge in bowls club second division

Results last week in Cammacks Division Two of the Night League at Boston Indoor Bowls Club saw Hotspurs and Desperados confirm their status as the teams most likely to vie for promotion come the end of the season in April.

Hotspurs took ten points from two matches, winning 6-0 against Vikings and 4-2 vs Kingfishers, to maintain leadership in this division with 27 points.  Against Vikings, Ken Burr’s rink, with lead Yvonne Smith and pin Stewart Reynolds, dominated the game, winning 29-10.  Mike Long won the second rink 18-9.  Mike Long also won against Kingfishers, 22-12, controlling the game from the tenth end.  Kingfishers took the other rink 16-11.

Desperados recovered from a poor result the previous week to record two convincing 6-0 wins, leaving them just 3 points behind Hotspurs in second place.  Adam Hodgson skipped Jason Williams and John Hodgson to win 30-10 against Vectors, while Dean Harris took the other rink 21-17.  In their second game, Desperados had good wins on both rinks against Amateurs, 26-9 for David Allen and 23-8 for Dean Harris.

Burtons took 8 points from their two games to move into third place, leaving them eight points behind Desperados.  Just six points separating Burtons and all the teams below them reflects the close competition in Division Two.  Beating Woodpeckers 6-0, Chris Hill won 14-9 by virtue of scoring six shots over the last three ends, and Reg Felton won 15-11, holding on as Woodpeckers finished strongly.

Shipmates recent good form saw them beat Burtons 4-2, with Jeff Ginsburgh’s rink dominating the game to win 26-7.  Chris Hill ensured 2 points for Burtons by taking the other rink 26-11.

Vikings beat Central 4-2, John Millership’s rink winning 25-10.  David Boyne won a close game for Central on the other rink by 15-13.

Amateurs took all the points against Phantoms, winning 20-7 and 14-13 for Jeff Homewood and Trevor Coulson.  Vectors then played Phantoms, winning 6-0, to move into fourth place, leaving Phantoms and Amateurs equal on points with them in fifth and sixth, but with poorer shot aggregates.  For Vectors, Colin Heppenstall dominated to win 18-5, while Kevin Rockall won 17-10.

In the Orchard Health Group First Division, Holland Fen extended their lead over Invaders at the top by beating Optimists on both rinks, 23-7 and 20-11, with Invaders dropping 2 points against Royal Mail, who took one rink 14-13, having led 6-0 and 10-3 early on.  Invaders took a close game on the other rink 18-11.

Strollers stay in third after beating Parthians 4-2, Andy Warne winning 16-10.  Keith Nix took the other rink, 17-12.

Dynamics met IBC and beat them 6-0 with good wins on both rinks to move them up to fourth, replacing IBC.  Mick Rate won 23-13 and Graham Wilkinson, 20-14.

Breakaways held onto fifth after taking just one point from a very close match with Golfers, the rink scores being 14-14 and 13-14.

A40’s best result of the season saw them beat Nomads 6-0 with 26-6 and 19-10 wins.

Evening League Report Week 3: 22 and 23 September 2024

Headline: New Indoor season starts at Bowls Club with Drawn Pairs competition

The new indoor season has begun at Boston Indoor Bowls Club. The action kicked off in the first week of September with a Drawn Pairs competition, the first competition to be played on the new carpet installed in May.

Attracting 66 bowlers playing a knock-out competition over five rounds, the winners were Jose Isaacs and Ian Clark who beat Wayne Smith and Richard Allam by 57 points to 43 in the final. Isaacs and Clark had the easier route through the previous rounds with wins of 20, 40, 20 and 20 points, compared with Smith and Allam’s progress of wins by 22, 8, 6 and 4 points. Thanks go to the sponsors Duckworth’s and the club’s Bonus Ball, and to Mark Brown and Carol Dowse for organising the event.

The new Night League competition is now well under way after playing the first three rounds. In the Orchard Health Group First Division, last year’s champions and runners-up, Holland Fen and Invaders, have both made perfect starts to the new campaign, taking the maximum of 18 points from their games.

Holland Fen played strongly to beat A40, Nomads and Royal Mail convincingly with an average shot advantage of over 40 shots per game. Invaders have been in charge in each of their matches against Nomads, Optimists and A40, but without the heavy scoring achieved by Holland Fen.

IBC and Strollers have started well and are close behind in third and fourth. IBC beat both Breakaways and Parthians 6-0, having control of the games on each rink. They shared the points 3-3 against Golfers, for whom David Marshall’s rink won well by 27-18.

Strollers took all the points against Golfers, winning one of the rinks 23-18 having started slowly to trail 4-16 at the half-way point. Against Dynamics and Breakaways, they won 4-2, with good wins on one rink in each match, 32-7 against Dynamics and 30-11 against Breakaways.

Dynamics have made a solid start to the season to be in fifth place, taking six points against Parthians, four off Golfers and two against Strollers. Graham Wilkinson’s rink, with Pam Rate and Seamus Rooney, have won all three of their games 27-10, 18-14 and 18-17.

Newly promoted Optimists took two points in their opening game against Royal Mail, winning one rink 25-20, lost both rinks against Invaders, then dominated the game with Nomads, winning 21-10 and 20-11.

In Cammacks Division Two, the early leaders are Woodpeckers, after taking six points off both Vikings and Phantoms and four points from Amateurs.

Desperados have played twice, winning both convincingly 6-0 against Shipmates and Kingfishers.

Hotspurs, relegated from Division One last season, are just behind in third. They were beaten 0-6 in their first match against Phantoms, in spite of starting well on both rinks, then took five points against Burtons and all six against Amateurs.

Just two points separate the next five teams after each have had inconsistent starts to the campaign, with Kingfishers in fourth, Phantoms, fifth, Vectors, sixth, Amateurs, seventh and Vikings, ninth.
